About Slavery: A Letter!

Yes, today again we have got something that’s definitely an article worth reading. Its not really an article, its a letter; one which has been written with utmost sincerity and genuine sarcasm by a slave to his old master. Slavery was practised in the United States till the mid  1860’s. It worked on the principle that the Africans would serve their white masters as slaves for their entire lives and their ‘slave’ status would be inherited by their children.

Slavery eventually ended in the U.S due to the  efforts of Abraham Lincoln leading to the  Thirteenth Amendment which declared:   “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

The following article  mentioned in this post is one that was written by a slave to his former master as a response to the master’s letter which requested him to come back and work on his farm. The letter’s content describes the way the slaves were treated and hence it serves as an important resource for knowing facts about the institution of slavery.

Do read.
